Derran earned his master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Eastern New Mexico University, where he studied Public Relations and Mass Communications. His commitment to education led him to serve a two-year gubernatorial appointment on the New Mexico Commission on Higher Education, as well as to work in the education field following graduation. His education highlights include:

  • Focused studies on communications theory and scientific research methods
  • Served a two-year gubernatorial appointment on the New Mexico Commission on Higher Education
  • Completed a Graduate Fellowship in the D.C. Office of U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman
    • Fellowship coordinated through the Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars
  • ¬†Taught Public Speaking courses as a Graduate Assistant

Bachelor of Science in Public Relations

  • Received the 1995 ENMU Award of Excellence
  • Received the 1995 ENMU Outstanding PR Student of the Year Award
  • Completed composite major focusing on public relations, business management, and marketing
  • Completed an undergraduate internship in the Santa Fe Opera Communications Department


Extracurricular Activities
Derran embraced the whole-student concept of universal learning and participated in a variety of extracurricular activities at ENMU:

  • Twice elected Student Government President
  • Played inside linebacker for four years on a full football scholarship
  • Won the 1991 Lone Star Conference Football Championship
  • Selected as a Defensive Team Captain
  • Represented the Black Men on Campus organization as a liaison to the university
  • Served as a Resident Assistant in student housing
  • Volunteered for the Date Rape Prevention Task Force
  • Served as the Student Government Board of Publications Chair and a Student Fees Committee member
  • Received the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Besser Lindsey Award for achievement in fraternity, scholarship, and athletics
