Cultivating the Dept. of Veterans Affairs Workforce

Department of Veterans Affairs, MyCareer@VA

As the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) worked to reduce its backlog of benefits claims and improve the quality of health care it delivers, Derran Eaddy consulted on the mission-critical MyCareer@VA initiative designed to help VA employees offer better services to Veterans. He worked with VA officials and contracting partners to launch the web-based MyCareer@VA program, which was cited in Congressional testimony as one of the Department’s top transformation initiatives and earned the Harvard Kennedy School of Government’s Bright Ideas in Government Award.

Pioneering Dept. of Defense Social Media

Department of Defense, Military Health System

Facebook, Twitter and YouTube opened global public discussions online and changed the way Federal agencies needed to communicate with constituents. While serving as a consultant to the Department of Defense (DoD), Derran Eaddy successfully navigated protocols to launch the Military Health System’s first social media program. Through those efforts, the Department was able to modernize its processes and become more open, transparent and responsive to the 10 million service members, spouses and dependents under the system’s care.

Communicating a Strategic Vision for Military Health Technology

Department of Defense, Military Health System, Office of the Chief Information Officer

Communicating the U.S. Military Health System’s (MHS) strategic technology vision requires an understanding of the technical resources and overall complexities of delivering services to war fighters. Derran Eaddy managed several communications initiatives, such as the development of the Office of the Chief Information Officer website and social media program. He also drafted strategic outreach plans, which supported the integration of U.S. military and Department of Veterans Affairs electronic health records.

Preparing Higher Ed Students for Workforce Success

New Mexico Commission on Higher Education, Commissioner

New Mexico is challenged with serving higher education students across vast rural areas and several urban centers. Derran Eaddy served a gubernatorial appointment on the New Mexico Commission on Higher Education where he represented the needs of students and provided direct oversight on all aspects of the state’s higher education governance system. The commission focused on legislative funding proposals, academic programs and facility construction needs for more than 25 institutions.

Advocating for K-12 Public School Excellence

National Education Association, Press and Media Relations

Students in the U.S. K-12 education system continuously lag behind other advanced nations in key areas: notably math and science assessments and graduation rates. As a press and media relations officer at the National Education Association, Derran Eaddy worked with news outlets across the country and advocated for public school support. He managed press during events, such as the NEA Foundation Gala honoring former President Bill Clinton and the Gulf Coast Read Across America Tour, which delivered books to schools damaged by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Continuously Improving U.S. Public School Administration

Guilford County Schools, K-12 Public Schools Administration

North Carolina’s Guilford County Schools served 65,000 diverse student on more than 100 campuses. It was challenged with delivering world-class education to students from affluent and disadvantaged backgrounds, and those who lived in rural and urban areas of the county. Derran Eaddy helped the district gain national recognition for its No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Schools, lowering district drop out rates, and increasing the number of students in Advanced Placement programs. His communications products regularly won awards from the National School Public Relations Association.

Reducing Childhood Obesity to Improve Health Outcomes

American Council for Fitness and Nutrition, Director

Nearly one-third of American children are overweight or obese and even more go on to become obese as adults. To combat sedentary lifestyles and poor eating habits, Derran Eaddy led the development of a schools-based childhood obesity prevention program conducted through a partnership among the American Council for Fitness and Nutrition, The American Dietetic Association Foundation, PE4Life and the Kansas City School District. The pilot program blended physical activity and nutrition education to help students avoid a range of health problems later in life, such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

Expanding Program Offerings at the Kennedy Center

The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Skateboard Ambassador

Fine arts centers continuously modernize their offerings to remain relevant and compelling to their core audiences, as well as to attract new patrons on the leading edge of cultural shifts. As a featured ambassador, Derran Eaddy contracted with the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts during its Finding a Line: Skateboarding, Music and Media festival. The first-of-its-kind event at the Kennedy Center allowed the venue to dispel its conservative reputation, connect with skateboarders who otherwise may not have been exposed to its programing, and expose its traditional audiences to a unique presentation of skateboarding as a performance art.
